“National test results in mathematics continue to improve but this is as much due to better test technique as it is to a rise in standards of mathematical understanding.

“Most schools have an enhanced focus in year nine on test questions and revision sessions, a feature that was especially apparent in visits to schools with rapidly improving results, where familiarity with the style of questioning in tests was considered important…

“However, it is notable that recent key stage three [results] improvements are not being sustained at GCSE.”
